ヤアコブはヘブライ語で
「かかとをつかむ者＝人を出し抜く者」を意味するとされる。

それは 旧約聖書　創世記 25章26節には、
ヤアコブ「יעקב」（イスラエル）が、
双子の兄・エサウのかかと（アケブ「עקב」）をつかんだまま生まれ、
後に兄を出し抜いて長子の祝福を得たことに由来すると説明されている。

And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son:
Abraham begat Isaac:

イサクは四十歳の時、
パダンアラムのアラムびとベトエルの娘で、
アラムびとラバンの妹リベカを妻にめとった。

And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife,
the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram,
the sister to Laban the Syrian.

イサクは妻が子を産まなかったので、
妻のために主に祈り願った。
主はその願いを聞かれ、妻リベカはみごもった。

And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife,
because she was barren:
and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

25:22
ところがその子らが胎内で押し合ったので、
リベカは言った、
「こんなことでは、わたしはどうなるでしょう」。
彼女は行って主に尋ねた。

25:22
And the children struggled together within her;
and she said, If it be so, why am I thus?
And she went to enquire of the LORD.

25:23
主は彼女に言われた、
「二つの国民があなたの胎内にあり、
二つの民があなたの腹から別れて出る。
一つの民は他の民よりも強く、兄は弟に仕えるであろう」。

25:23
And the LORD said unto her,
Two nations are in thy womb,
and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels;
and the one people shall be stronger than the other people;
and the elder shall serve the younger.

25:24
彼女の出産の日がきたとき、胎内にはふたごがあった。

And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

さきに出たのは赤くて全身毛ごろものようであった。
それで名をエサウと名づけた。

And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment;
and they called his name Esau.

25:26
その後に弟が出た。
その手はエサウのかかとをつかんでいた。

それで名をヤコブと名づけた。

リベカが彼らを産んだ時、
　　　　　　　イサクは六十歳であった。

And after that came his brother out,
and his hand took hold on Esau's heel;
and his name was called Jacob:
and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

さてその子らは成長し、
エサウは巧みな狩猟者となり、
野の人となったが、
ヤコブは穏やかな人で、天幕に住んでいた。

25:27
And the boys grew:
and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field;
and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

イサクは、
しかの肉が好きだったので、
エサウを愛したが、
リベカはヤコブを愛した。

And Isaac loved Esau,
because he did eat of his venison:
but Rebekah loved Jacob.

ある日ヤコブが、
あつものを煮ていた時、
エサウは飢え疲れて野から帰ってきた。

And Jacob sod pottage:
and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

25:30
エサウはヤコブに言った、
「わたしは飢え疲れた。
お願いだ。
赤いもの、その赤いものをわたしに食べさせてくれ」。
彼が名をエドムと呼ばれたのはこのためである。

25:30
And Esau said to Jacob,
Feed me,
I pray thee,
with that same red pottage;
for I am faint:
therefore was his name called Edom.

25:31
ヤコブは言った、
「まずあなたの長子の特権をわたしに売りなさい」。

25:31
And Jacob said,
Sell me this day thy birthright.

25:32
エサウは言った、
「わたしは死にそうだ。
長子の特権などわたしに何になろう」。

25:32
And Esau said,
Behold,
I am at the point to die:
and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

25:33
ヤコブはまた言った、
「まずわたしに誓いなさい」。
彼は誓って長子の特権をヤコブに売った。

25:33
And Jacob said,
Swear to me this day;
and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

25:34
そこでヤコブは
パンとレンズ豆のあつものとをエサウに与えたので、
彼は飲み食いして、
立ち去った。
このようにしてエサウは長子の特権を軽んじた。

25:34
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles;
and he did eat and drink,
and rose up,
and went his way:
thus Esau despised his birthright.
